Guildhall Art Gallery was burned down during a severe air raid in May 1941. The
new gallery was formally opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 2 November 1999. Now
pictures that were for years only available for public viewing at temporary exhibitions,
and in the form of reproductions, are once more on permanent display again. One
of the many paintings on show at Guildhall, is Britain's largest independent oil
painting; John Singleton Copley's The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar
(Sept 1782). Entrance Fees
