Donnington Castle was built in 1386 by Richard Abberbury the Elder and is located north of Newbury, Berkshire. Both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I visited Donnington Castle and the latter wanted to live there during her imprisonment by her sister, Queen Mary I, but this was not allowed. The surviving bit of the castle includes the gatehouse and is open for exterior viewing with free entry.
