This 17 century house in Leeds
was built for the Lascelles family who made there money through
sugar plantations in Barbados and who are an ancient family
and came to Britain with William the Conqueror. Harewood House
is known for its furniture that was designed especially for
the house by Thomas Chippendale. A fine art collection has
also been built up over the years includes works by Reynolds,
Gainsborough and Turner. In the extensive grounds are woodland
and lakeside walks and they holds summer events including
concerts. There is also the famous Harewood Bird Garden with
exotic birds and a breeding program of certain endangered
varieties.
