History The Alexandra
Theatre is a beautiful Edwardian Theatre with 1347 seats. Showing pre and post
West End productions, touring shows, opera, ballet, musicals and concerts. The
Theatre is home to the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. This company was formed by
Richard D'Oyly and is recognised as the original Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company
where formed in 1871. The Company closed in 1982 but reestablished itself in 1991
and moved into their new high at the Alexandra Theatre. Playbox Theatre also holds
performances at the Alexandra Theatre. They are one of Europe's leading theatre
operations for children and young people.
