History When the
Playhouse opened in 1929 it was a huge cinema with only a few Theatre shows. Only
a few minutes walk from the city centre the Theatre was popular with the locals.
In the 1970s the Theatre was planned to be demolished however it was saved from
this fate by popular demand and was given status as a listed historic building.
After an extensive refurbishment in 1993 the Theatre soon became one of the most
successful in Scotland. With ticket prices to suit all pockets the Theatre hosts
productions including light entertainment, dramas and musicals. The Theatre is
also a venue in August for the Edinburgh Festival. Productions 23 & 24/03/07 - Aida - Ellen Kent International
