Based on the stories of Russian author Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof is set in Tsarist Russia in 1905, and tells the story of Tevye, a dairyman and old-fashioned father who dreams of seeing his daughters married in the traditional Jewish manner. However, revolution is in the air and the young follow their hearts and not the advice of their fathers. Fiddler on the Roof has a book by Joseph Stein and features songs such as Tradition, Matchmaker, Matchmaker and If I Were a Rich Man.
