Theatre History
The first theatre on this site was built in 1866 and was called The New Prince of Wales Theatre. This theatre was the biggest and most successful in Liverpool at the time, the theatre that now stands on the site is half as big again. The new theatre was opened in 1925 the Empire Theatre and still holds production to this day. Both Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby have performed there. The theatre was threatened with closure in 1977 when the owners Moss Empries reveled that it has made a loss for the passed five years. With public backing the theatre was taken over by Merseyside County Council in 1979 and they undertook extensive renovations. Clear Channel Entertainment now owns the Empire Theatre.
