History
The Theatre
Royal was built in 1807 by Royal assent. It took only 10 months to be built and
was one of the finest Theatres constructed outside London. Seating and audience
of a to 1200 people the first production was Hamlet. For the first 50 years the
Theatre had mixed fortunes both financially and in management as no manager lasting
more than 18 months. In 1854 an actor took over the management of the Theatre
he turns it around adding more seats and matinees performances when he died his
wife took over and continued to run a successful Theatre introducing pantos as
a Christmas tradition and becoming one of the most established Theatres outside
of London. When she died in 1892 she left the Theatre to a corporation who on
safety grounds had to rebuilt a large part of the Theatre and adding its own box
office. The Theatre stayed open throughout both Wars and the depression in the
thirties keeping its standing in the Theatre world. In 1959 the Queen made a private
to the Theatre and added to its prestige. The Ambassador Theatre group took over
the Theatre in 1999 and it now has seating for 952 people. Productions
